On the afternoon of August 30 182, Colonel Nathaniel McLean's brigade occupied this ground as they fought against elements of Confederate General James Longstreet's massive attack. Faced with overwhelming numbers, McLean's brigade began to fall back northward up the spine of Chinn Ridge. Additional Federal and Confederate troops surged onto the plateau as the fighting grew in intensity.
