Ranch owner Gus Griffin put a pump system in this spot to improve on previous efforts to control water flow. The pump could only be used when the Paria River ran clear, which rarely happened, as mud would clog and ruin machinery. The road to Kanab, Utah once continued from here. Today a trail into the Paria Canyon Wilderness takes its place. Explore upstream and the irrigation system, where skeletons of scattered ranch buildings decay amid spectacular red rock desert.
