Andrew and Eliza lived in the Early Home from the 1830s until they moved into their larger Homestead in 1851. While living in this house, Johnson served as town tailor while starting his career in politics. He was elected Alderman of the town of Greeneville in 1829. It was in this house that the Johnsons began their family; it was to this house that they brought their first slaves in 1842 and 1843.
Inside the Early Home today, you will find exhibits which tell the story of Johnson's early life - his arrival in Greeneville, his family & slave family, and his start in politics. There is also a popular time-line which parallels Johnson's life with those in the nation.
