After his rousing speech, Col. Dan would lead his men from the front, spearheading the charge against the Confederate works. Once to the stout entrenchment, McCook would mount the works with his sword held high. Nixon Stewart, a soldier in the 52nd Ohio fighting alongside McCook would witness this scene. He writes “Our brave Colonel urging his men on, was struck as he said ‘Come on boys, the day is won,’ as he reached the earthwork. He was shot about 4 inches below the collar bone, in the right breast, falling outside of the fortifications.” McCook was believed to have been wounded in close vicinity to this location. After his wound, he would be carried to the rear of the action. He was then transported back to his home in Ohio, where he died on July 17th, 1864. Just days before his death, he was promoted to Brigadier General.
