Iye, (Yakama tribal word for welcome), to the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park! As you walk along this 1.5 mile loop trail, you will be treated to views of Mount Adams, Mount Baker, and Mount Rainier, a geologic landscape that has been shaped by fire and ice, and the world renowned subalpine meadows that are found here. These plants that live in the subalpine, situated on the higher slopes of the mountain live by thin margins, face fierce competition for resources, and endure long winters with harsh conditions. The lingering snow and short summers leave little time for plants to grow, flower, and seed. After surviving all this, their greatest threat may be the millions of visitors coming to appreciate them. As you enjoy the views today, do your part to preserve this subalpine environment by staying on trails.
