Standing 1,808 above sea level, Big Kennesaw is a prominent mondadknock (isolated peak not connected to another chain) in Cobb County, GA. The one-mile hike from the Visitor Center to this point is one of the more popular (and challenging!) trails in the park. Offering commanding views to the north and south, this mountain has been significant for centuries. Native Americans were said to have named it either after a prominent Chief in the area, or from the term ‘Ghaneesah’, which meant ‘sacred place’ or ‘burial place’. Looking to the south, you can see several large skylines, the two most prominent being Buckhead and Atlanta. Looking to the north, you can see the path of Cobb Parkway stretching to the northwest horizon. Also, on a clear day, you can see the distant range of the Allatoona Mountains.
