There are three buildings in the park that you can tour between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day, the Visitor Center, which is the building to your right, plus Engine House No. 6 Exhibit Shelter and the Lemon House, both of which are a short distance down the boardwalk in front of you. There is no charge to visit the park!
The best place to start your visit is by watching the park orientation movie in the Visitor Center. Learn the fascinating story of the Allegheny Portage Railroad and the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal and how canal boats were hauled over this mountain from 1834 to 1854. When you have seen the exhibits and models in the visitor center, please journey back in time by following this boardwalk to the Portage Railroad itself. The Boardwalk is also the starting point of the park’s Inclines 6 to 10 Trail. Please ask in the visitor center for further trail information and a map. Park regulations and information on special events can be found on the bulletin board in front of you. If you have any questions or concerns during your visit, please ask the ranger on duty in the visitor center or dial 814-886-6150. For emergencies, please dial 911.
