Defensive tactics
Thick stems and small leaves help plants reduce water loss in the blazing sunshine. Cacti, trees, and even grasses bristle with points to protect them from hungry animals.

Survival of the fittest
Animals are well equipped to fight for their survival. Many have horns, claws, fangs, or stingers to attack and immobilize foes. Others have strong armor to assist in their defense.
