Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

Open 9:15 am-3:45 pm, last entry 3:30 pm (May 22 to October 22, 2022). Step House, and the rest of Wetherill Mesa, are closed nightly and seasonally.

Step House is an Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwelling located on Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park. 

The Step House trail is open only when staffed by a ranger. Step House is currently the only self-guided cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde that may be visited without buying a ticket for a tour. Rangers stationed inside Step House are available to answer questions. Brochures are available at the trailhead and at park visitor centers. Allow 45 minutes to one hour to visit.

The Step House trailhead is located next to the Wetherill Mesa kiosk. The 1-mile (1.6-km) loop trail is steep, with a 165-foot (50 m) descent and ascent.
