The Staple Bend Tunnel was the first railroad tunnel built in America and shortened the Portage Railroad by bypassing a bend in the Little Conemaugh River. The trail follows the old railbed of the Portage Railroad and remains of the Portage can be seen along the two miles it takes to reach the tunnel. A flashlight is helpful to see features in the tunnel itself. Please pace yourself on the four mile round trip. To learn more about the Allegheny Portage Railroad, please visit our main site which is just off the Gallitzin exit of Route 22 between Ebensburg and Altoona.
