Staff Row was the home of the settlement’s administrators, doctors, dentists, nurses, and their families. The fences here dramatically illustrate the rules of physical separation between patients and non-patients once enforced at Kalaupapa. Patients had to press a buzzer and wait at the gate to see the doctor or other staff. Some of these gates with buzzers are visible today.

Doctors and administrators still live at Staff Row. Fortunately, many fences have been lowered, but a few remain as a reminder of the past.
