In 1822, the first Roman Catholic church in Annapolis, St. Mary’s was built. Today, the site is owned by the Redemptorists, a Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers. The current church was built around 1860. Perched next to St. Mary’s on the banks of Spa Creek for over 300 years, the Carroll House was the birthplace of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Carroll inherited this home as well as vast agricultural estates in Maryland and ownership of hundreds of enslaved persons.

Across the bridge is Eastport. Originally a small town with a thriving, diverse maritime community, it was annexed into the Annapolis city limits in 1951. Visitors can learn more about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park on Second Street.
