Established as a parish in 1692, the first St. Anne’s Church was built here on Church Circle about 1700. In 1775, the building was taken down, anticipating a new, bigger church. As the city was then on the eve of the Revolution, the building of the second church was put on hold until after the war. The second church was completed in 1792 but suffered a devastating fire on Valentine’s Day in 1858. The current structure was completed in 1859.
