Southwest Casemate, Artificers' Quarters

A man sits near a table with various tools, tin, and silver pieces sitting in front of him.
The men who worked in this room were tradesmen hired by the military to maintain the fort.

National Park Service

Skilled civilian workmen, called artificers, were employed by the army for specialized work that the soldiers might not have been able to perform. Carpenters, blacksmiths, and other tradesmen would have lived in this room during the 3rd NY’s time at the fort, and it was furnished much like the other soldiers’ barracks you have seen. During excavations in the 1970s, fragments of numerous tool, ironworks, and other supplies used by these workers were found in this location, suggesting this was their typically assigned work area, if not living area as well.
