Sky Meadows State Park preserves 1,860 acres of rolling pastures, meadows, woodlands, and historic farm landscapes along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The park reflects more than three centuries of agricultural life in the Crooked Run Valley, offering insight into how farming shaped the region’s cultural and ecological character within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. As part of the Chesapeake Gateways Network, the park connects visitors to the pastoral landscapes and natural systems that have sustained the Bay and its people.
Visitors can use more than 22 miles of hiking trails, as well as designated routes for biking and horseback riding, accommodating a range of skill levels from leisurely walks to challenging terrain. Access to the Appalachian Trail provides opportunities to embark on longer adventures throughout the region. Popular recreational activities include picnicking and fishing at Turner Pond, as well as primitive hike-in camping options available for families and groups.
Family-friendly experiences include the Children’s Discovery Area and an outdoor classroom, where interactive play and environmental learning encourage connections to agriculture, nature, and history. The Sensory Explorers’ Trail offers an inclusive, accessible experience with tactile features and audio interpretation allowing people to use their senses to explore the blend of nature and 300 years of agriculture. Designated an International Dark Sky Park, Sky Meadows State Park also offers exceptional stargazing and night sky interpretative programming.
