Sierra Grande is an andesite-shield volcano that erupted around 2.41 to 2.88 million years ago. Rising around 2,200 feet above the surrounding praire, it is located 10 miles to the southeast of Capulin Volcano. At around 8,720 feet elevation, it is also the easternmost point in the United States that reaches an elevation higher than 8,000 feet.
