Sandy Spring Museum offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the local heritage and community life of Central Maryland. As a Chesapeake Gateways Place, the museum connects regional stories to the broader history of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, including its legacy of settlement, abolition, agriculture, and civic life.
Changing exhibits feature works by folk artists that explore culture, identity, tradition and place. The museum’s digitized archives allows for public access to personal narratives, historical records, and photographs that document the region’s evolving identity. The archives are especially rich in materials related to local African American history.
As the Regional Folklife Center for Montgomery County, the museum supports partners who preserve and present traditional arts through workshops, live performances, and public programs. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences, from music and dance to crafts and storytelling, guided by experienced regional artists.
The museum campus includes an arboretum, sculpture walk, and wooded trails with interpretive signage. A new amphitheater and “cultural commons” expands the museum’s ability to host free and low cost programs, artist residencies, and seasonal festivals.
Bridging past and present, Sandy Spring Museum offers an engaging space for learning, engagement, and creative exchange. Visit their website to explore exhibitions, upcoming events, and educational offerings.
