San Juan Island has a rich agricultural heritage that predates the Pig War itself. The first non-native settlement on our island was theĀ Belle Vue Sheep Farm, a massive corporate farm operated by the Hudson's Bay Company that had over 4,000 sheep, cattle, pigs, and other animals and produce. The first Americans on island were also small farmers; The Pig War itself was sparked by an agricultural dispute when an American farmer killed one of the pigs belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company. After its resolution, many of the soldiers deployed to the island, such as the Jakle family remained on the island as homesteaders.
Agriculture continues to thrive at the San Juan Island Farmers Market. Founded in 1987, it features around 35 vendors including artists, artisans, farmers, and bakers. Visitors can purchase produce raised on island and seafood from our waters. Shellfish, cheese, salmon, eggs, fruits, and vegetables are available as well as prepared food from around the world such as falafel, momos, paella, and pizza. The Farmers Market is open from 9:30AM-1 PM every Saturday from April-October and the 1st and 3d Saturday in November, December, and March. In January and February, it is open on the first Saturday of the month.
