After four years of fundraising efforts by both famous theater professionals and committed local actors, the San Juan Island Community Theater and Arts Center was created in the summer of 1989. This theatre hosts traveling shows, play competitions, concerts, film screenings, an art gallery featuring works from local artists, and community celebrations and meetings. Most performances take place in the evening, beginning at 7:30, but weekend matinees are also regularly held. There are two theaters in the facility, the 275 seat Whittier Theater and the 75 patron Gubelman Theatre. The Theatre also holds arts and acting education for people of all ages.
