Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

The site of the Roosevelt’s tennis court was located near present-day Sagamore Hill Road. Theodore and the rest of the Roosevelt family enjoyed friendly competition in this shady spot at the bottom of the hill, often making up their own special rules of the game, which allowed for a “let” if a ball that might have landed fairly hit an overhanging branch. There are no known photographs of Theodore Roosevelt playing tennis – he believed that the game was considered a sport for society’s elite and a photo of him engaged in a match might spoil his public image.
