When the building was first in use this entrance would have been used by the bishop, clergy, and high-ranking visitors. The other side of the building is where the servants and students entered. This reflects the class-based society of Russia at the time.
At the desk there will be a staff member to answer your questions and where you can sign up for a guided tour of the upstairs depending on availability and staffing. The first floor historically housed a school for children, some boarded at the house as well, a seminary, consistory, the kitchen, and priest’s quarters. While the second floor functioned as the bishop’s residence. Over time the first floor evolved to house everything from apartments to printing presses, and the second floor remained mostly unchanged.
