When infantry attacks against the Hornets' Nest failed, the Confederates bombarded it with 11 batteries of artillery, a total of 53 big guns. This concentrated artillery bombardment on the Union position, in addition to the infantry converging on the Federal flanks, led to the capture of General Benjamin Prentiss and nearly 2,200 Union soldiers.
