Rose Park Tennis Courts
Quick Facts
MANAGED BY:
Two young women of color—sisters—made a name for themselves on this court. Any idea who they were?
It’s not the Williams Sisters. The Peters sisters (Margaret and Roumania) grew up in the little house just there on O Street and often played tennis here in Rose Park. As they got older, their talents on the tennis courts would earn them both scholarships to Tuskegee University where they would hone their skills and terrify opponents. They won 14 American Tennis Association championship titles in the 1940s and 1950s and even played with movie stars.
The sisters returned to Georgetown and continued to teach tennis in Rose Park. Not until the early 2010s were their accomplishments recognized officially by the US Tennis Association.
Rose Park Tennis Courts are open to the public and are actively used by members of the community.
