Serving as one of the most frequented locations along the southern Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Rocky Knob Recreation Area at MP 169 contains a picnic area, campground, several nearby overlooks as well as trails that visitors may enjoy.
Built in 1937, the picnic area is one of the earliest projects completed on the parkway. Rocky Knob is so named from the rock that emerges above the surrounding plateau along with the rocky outcroppings found throughout the site. Views from this area include Buffalo Mountain and Rock Castle Gorge, which descends 2000’ down the mountain. Until 1962 the campground and picnic area were together, however due to increasing usage the campground was relocated to its current location 2 miles up the road its footprint converted into additional day use spots.
Due to the topography here, many of the picnic sites sit on a slope and may require a walk up or down the hill. The picnic area includes 72 tables and grills, several water fountains, two comfort stations, and a pavilion. Additionally, there are group picnic areas by the open field. Picnic sites are on a first come first serve basis. The area is typically open from late May to late October. Thank you for not leaving food unattended and for using the dumpsters provided.
Surrounding the picnic area is a 1.0 mile easy loop trail that can be accessed at several different points on site.
Check the conditions of the area before you visit.
