Monument Information

This monuement was donated by the Washington County Pomona Grange No. 2 of Rhode Island in 1963. The State of Rhode Island had previously appropriated funds in 1896 and again in 1906 for creation of monuments within the park, but both attempts ran into disagreements involving land ownership and site location.

This monument commemorates the contributions and sacrifices of the officers and soldiers of Rhode Island at Valley Forge. The 1st and 2nd Rhode Island Regiments were part of General Varnum's Brigade. These regiments were known for their high proportion of black soldiers.
