What you see beneath your feet is a reconstructed section of the Oregon Trail. Between 1842 and 1847, immigrants traveling to the Pacific Northwest would sometimes choose to stop by the mission at weyíiletpe. Most people on the trail went straight through the Umatilla River Valley, but some travelled this way if they needed to restock supplies, receive treatment from Dr. Whitman, or shelter for the winter before continuing west.

Looking down this trail in the spring, summer, and fall, you will see a replica of the covered wagons that were used for the trek west. In the winter, you can find the wagon without its cover by the back entrance of the visitor center.
