James Read, a Cambridge tanner, built thisĀ house aboutĀ 1738. Two of his sons served in the New England Army during the American Revolution, marching on the alarm of April 19, 1775 to Lexington and Concord.

The building was later bought by Radcliffe College in 1943 and used as a dormitory. In 1969, Harvard University moved the building from 5 Farwell place to its current location to make room for the Gutman Library. It currently serves as office buildings for the Graduate School of Education.
