Upon reaching Gilbert Town and finding Patrick Ferguson gone, the disappointed Patriots had to make a tough decision: Should they turn back? Or continue in pursuit? It was decided to not have marched in vain, and they continued southward in pursuit of their British foe.

The portion of the Purple Martin Trail following Cleghorn Creek is a part of the Overmountain Victory NHT. The trail is paved, bicycle and stroller friendly, and currently apx. 2 miles long. There is a small amount of roadside parking where the trail crosses Skyline Drive. The only restroom facility at this parking location is a portable toilet. More facilities are available at the northern end of the trail in downtown Rutherfordton.

Food and recreational opportunities are nearby in downtown Rutherfordton and at Crestview Park, and there are 3 picnic shelters along the trail.
