Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park
Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits
Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park in northwest Arkansas holds significance not only as the site of a pivotal Civil War battle in 1862 but also as a segment of the Cherokee Trail of Tears. During the brutal winter of 1838–39, one of the Cherokee "Benge detachments" passed through what is now Prairie Grove, enduring forced marches under harsh conditions, often in snow and deep cold. Moreover, Arkansas State Parks hosts interpretive events at Prairie Grove, such as guided talks on the Cherokee removal journey. In this way, the site preserves dual narratives: the fierce Civil War confrontation and the earlier, tragic passage of Native American communities. Visitors can walk historic ground that reflects both the ravages of battle and the sorrow of displacement, connecting these layered chapters of American history.
