Located along the historic James River in northwestern Powhatan County, Powhatan State Park offers opportunities to explore the natural landscapes and recreational traditions of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The park encompasses diverse habitats that include upland hardwood forests, pine stands, open meadows, vernal pools, pawpaw groves and more than two miles of James River shoreline, supporting wildlife such as deer, songbirds, raptors, and other native species.

Visitors can experience the river and surrounding landscape through nearly 12 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife observation. Three car-top boat launches provide access to the James River for paddling, fishing, and canoe camping, connecting visitors to one of the Chesapeake region’s most significant waterways. Primitive canoe-in campsites, riverside recreation, and scenic river floats encourage exploration of the James River corridor and its ecological importance.

The park also features campgrounds, yurts, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and group camping facilities that support overnight stays and outdoor learning experiences for visitors of all ages. As part of the Chesapeake Gateways Network, Powhatan State Park helps connect visitors to the natural and cultural history of the James River and the broader Chesapeake Bay watershed. Visitors can learn more through the park’s website.
