The post commander occupied the two-story house in the center of Officers' Row. Usually a major, he was responsible for all operations at the post.
This building was one of the last of the sandstone buildings completed after the Civil War. Most of the of the sandstone blocks on this building are "finished" or squared off to look like bricks. The post commander at the time of construction believed the home for the most important officer on the post should look grander than all the other buildings.
Towards the top of the building the neat looking stones end. An officer from the Inspector General's office touring forts in the department considered the extra expense of finishing off the stones wasteful and ordered a stop to it.
Once finished, Maj. Meridith Kidd was the first post commander to occupy the house with his family.
