John T. McCutcheon
1909
Another potentially unpublished piece of McCutcheon’s work- this draft may not have a completed copy associated with it. Both columns highlight some of Roosvelt’s accomplishments while in office. This cartoon was perhaps meant to be a two-page spread. The title text reads “We have with us today, a man who.” The columns text reads, in order of left to right and top to bottom:
- Awakened the American civic conscience.
- Advocated the principle of the Square Deal in the interest of the under dog, who was being kicked around.
- Gave us pure food laws to protect us from food poisoners.
- Protected our natural resources from greedy private exploitation.
- Fought reactionary aldrichism in the Senate.
- Was the only man the giants of finance feared.
- Fought reactionary cannonism in the house.
- Put human rights above property rights.
- Gave this country good railroad rate legislation.
- Made the Panama Canal possible in spite of (word unintelligible) railroad opposition.
- Gave us an Employees’ Liability Act and eight hour legislation.
- Settled the great anthracite coal strike in the interest of the public.
- Discovered the long-(word unintelligible) Sherman Anti Trust Law and began criminal prosecution
- Established peace between Russia and Japan and thus ended a long and bloody war.
- Formalized those policies which were overwhelmingly elected in 1908.
- Was given the Nobel Peace Prize of $40,000, which he donated to the industrial peace movement.
