New York Evening Sun
Theodore Roosevelt chose to not run in the 1916 election despite public support, although he campaigned extensively for Republican candidate Charles Evans Hughes. Hughes ultimately lost to Woodrow Wilson, but Roosevelt “cleared the way” for Huges to run. In this cartoon by Robert Carter, Roosevelt is pictured as a football player, breaking through the line of Hughes’ detractors. Huges, pictured behind him with a ball labeled “election,” now has a clear path to the Presidency.
