PIN103: Coastal Prairie (Bird Island Basin Road)
Scenic View/Photo Spot
This Chronolog station provides long-term monitoring of the changing plant life within the coastal prairie habitat in the park. The prairie habitat at this station is in an area of ephemeral wetlands. During times when standing water is present, large numbers of wading birds can be present.
These grasslands make up some of the last intact coastal prairie ecosystems left in the United States. Once covering several million acres along the Texas coast, it is estimated that less than 1% of the coastal prairies remain in the state today.
