The politician Philander Chase Knox converted the house from an ornate Victorian mansion to the Colonial Revival you see today. In 1965, the property was acquired by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and became a part of Valley Forge State Park.
A swimming pool and bath house were part of the opulent Queen Anne-style estate developed on the property in the 1890s by a wealthy couple who made their fortune during the California gold rush.
In 1901, the estate was bought by P.C. Knox, who served as a cabinet member to three United States presidents. He intended the property to be his weekend retreat from Washington, D.C. and to give his eldest son a place to breed horses.
The National Park Service has overseen the maintenance of the P.C. Knox estate since 1976. Today, the historic mansion and grounds function as a treasured event venue, leased through a special authority granted to Valley Forge National Historical Park.
