Pettingill-Mason House
Quick Facts
MANAGED BY:
Glocester Heritage Society
Built in the mid-eighteenth century by the Pettingill family, Dr. Reuben Mason purchased the property in 1774. Dr. Mason based his medical practice out of his home until his death in 1799. During this time, he also served as a surgeon during the American Revolutionary War. The family sold the property to Thomas Owen in March 1805.
During the Dorr Rebellion in 1842, the Mason House served as a base of operations for the state militia. Fortunately, bloodshed was averted, but the house played a key role in the ending of the conflict.
Upon the completion of a major restoration, the house is now used by the Glocester Historical Society. It houses the Dorr Rebellion Museum.
