This sign marks the northern entrance to Big Bend National Park. Situated at the base of a low saddle in the surrounding mountains, one has a good view of the country to the north and east. This natural pass through the Santiago Mountains has defined the path of travel into and out of Big Bend country for centuries. Todays' visitors to Big Bend follow a route that was created long ago, not by vehicles, but by the repeated tread of feet and hooves. As you follow these historic footprints into the park, try to imagine traversing this landscape on foot. How would your Big Bend experience be different?
