Pergola
The pergola is located next to the Tabby House and the former polo field in the Dungeness Historic District. It was constructed as part of the Carnegie family's Dungeness estate. Vining plants crept up and over the pergola and provided shade and cooler temperatures. A breeze would makes its way through the natural tunnel. The vegetation stretched the length of the pergola and created an atmosphere of beauty and natural perfume. Spectators observed polo games, took leisurely strolls, and socialized, all while protected from the sun.
On your next visit to Cumberland take a moment to stop by the pergola and imagine yourself as a Carnegie guest enjoying a polo game or a shaded stroll, maybe even sipping a cool drink with ice courtesy of the estate's ice-making plant.
