Significance:
Located along a route between the piedmont and Great Valley of Virginia, the ‘Big Spring’ in the picnic area has refreshed travelers for some 8,000 years and the valley forest has shaded many a replenishing meal along Stony Creek.

The Peaks of Otter Picnic Area offers 58 picnic tables and grills scattered along a half mile of Little Stony Creek. The sites offer a wide range of scenery from cozy creekside tables nestled between spicebushes to a large group area with an open meadow great for games and play.

Many of the sites have a charcoal grill for you to prepare favorite foods over open flames. There are two comfort stations with cold potable water and flushing toilets, and you can dispose of trash in the on-site dumpsters. All tables and sites are available on a first come, first served basis. The Peaks of Otter Picnic Area is an open-air area with no covered tables or seating during inclement weather. The picnic area is open seasonally from May to November. Roadside tables are available throughout the year along the Parkway motor road.
