Monument Description

This monument, donated by the Valley Forge Park Commission under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1908, marks the location of the encampment of Patterson's Brigade. There were four regiments in the brigade commanded by Brigadier General John Patterson in Major General Baron Johann De Kalb's Division. Brig. General Patterson had served since the siege of Boston in 1775 and was eventually promoted to Major General by the end of the war. Major General De Kalb was a Bavarian who served in the French Army and was sent to serve in the American Army with the Marquis de Lafayette. He served with distinction until he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Camden in 1780.
