If you were a guest coming to White Haven, the parlor would likely be your first stop. The parlor was a place for the Dent family to bond and catch up with visitors from a variety of places. Ulysses S. Grant first came to White Haven in 1843, and would soon meet his future wife, Julia, at the home. In the parlor is where Ulysses and Julia became acquainted during the early stages of their courtship. The parlor is also where the Dents entertained several famous guests. If you’re familiar with the Lewis and Clark expedition of the early 1800’s, William Clark lived in St. Louis for a period of time after the journey. Clark on at least one occasion visited the Dent family at White Haven, a good example of the connections the family had in St. Louis.
