Continuing around the other side of the mesa, the route crosses sand dunes, some of the younger deposits in the park. Petrified Forest is located at the southern end of the Tusayan Erg or dune field. These Quaternary deposits sit on the much older Late Triassic Chinle Formation. The highly eroded towers beyond are part of the Chinle Formation.
