Dead tree
Looming before you is a dead live oak which has lost all its bark. This white skeleton provides many benefits to the forest community. Birds such as woodpeckers will eat the insects that burrow through the wood. Birds and squirrels may nest in cavities. Fungi will spread throughout the tree slowly aiding in the decomposition. As time passes the tree will turn into soil feeding a new generation of plants in the forest.
