This area is part of weyíıletpuu, or Cayuse, homeland. As you explore, you’ll see small signs like the ones in this garden with the names for each plant in three different languages: Cayuse Nez Perce, Latin, and common English. In these small native plant gardens, there are several flowering species including the arrow leaf balsamroot sunflower (pášx̣) for which the weyíiletpuu named the area near modern-day Walla Walla. Wildflowers like pášx̣ and grasses like the tall Great Basin Wild Rye, or šušéeqiy, behind it are some of the native plants that have always been found on this landscape.
