The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial offers visitors a peaceful and moving space to remember the 184 people who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon and aboard American Airlines Flight 77. Located just outside the Pentagon, the memorial features 184 illuminated Memorial Units, each honoring an individual victim, set among 85 Crape Myrtle trees and the distinctive Age Wall, which rises in height to reflect the ages of those who were lost. As visitors explore the memorial, they can learn more about each victim while reflecting on the profound impact of September 11, and the courage and sacrifice that followed.
At the entrance, a black granite marker commemorates the moment Flight 77 struck the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. The Memorial Units are arranged along an age line, creating a powerful visual timeline spanning from three-year-old Dana Falkenberg to 71-year-old Navy veteran John D. Yamnicky. Each bench is oriented according to where the individual was at the time of the attack, while pools of water beneath the units create a serene reflection, particularly in the evening. Free and generally open 24 hours a day, the memorial provides visitors with a quiet, accessible space to remember, reflect, and honor those whose lives were forever changed on September 11.
Getting here
There is no public parking at the memorial.Pentagon is the closest Metro station and bus depot. Exiting the station, continue along the sidewalk keeping the Pentagon on your right until you reach the memorial; it is approximately a 10 minute, 0.5 mile walk to the memorial.
