A small fissure runs through this part of the Upper Terrace of Mammoth Hot Springs. This crack in the earth allows hot water laden with calcium carbonate to flow to the surface. Once at the surface, the calcium carbonate is deposited into travertine terraces, which end up running the length of the fissure.
