Quick Facts
From the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center, enjoy an easy one‑mile round‑trip stroll to the historic Murie Ranch. Parking is available at the visitor center. The trail begins just behind the Moose statue outside the visitor center.

The Murie Ranch was once the home of Olaus and Mardy Murie, two of the most influential leaders in the American conservation movement. Their research, writing, and advocacy helped shape modern ideas about protecting wild places and expanding America’s public lands.

For decades, this rustic homestead served as a gathering place for scientists, writers, and environmental leaders. Here, they shared ideas and worked together on major conservation efforts. Discussions at the ranch helped inspire landmark laws such as the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the Alaska Lands Act of 1980. Together, these acts permanently protected millions of acres of federal land and strengthened the foundation of American wilderness conservation.

Today, the Murie Ranch is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, honoring the Muries’ lasting legacy in protecting some of the nation’s most treasured landscapes.

During the summer, you can join a daily docent‑led tour of the ranch. Check the park calendar for current times and details.
