Significance:
Old ruin of aqueduct water system
Several features of the water collection system of the Morris Aqueduct Company remain visible in the park today. The Aqueduct Company was a private company founded in 1799 to provide subscribers with fresh, clean water. The Aqueduct Company expanded into Jockey Hollow in 1890 seeking more sources of water for the town of Morristown. A system of aqueducts, holding ponds and pumping stations were built, extending seven miles from Jockey Hollow into Morristown.

This brick vault collected water brought in from streams and “collecting arm” trenches. The remains of one of these trenches is nearby behind you, though it may seem difficult to tell apart from the hills of the hollow. A gravity system forced water from this vault into the nearby reservoir which was drained in the 1930’s.

As this is a historic ruin, please do not disturb any part of the structure, nor toss anything into it.
