Mules are a hybrid of offspring from a male donkey and a female horse. They are generally smaller than horses, but stronger and more surefooted. They were preferred over horses for farm work and were an important part of agricultural production in the United States and around the world. 

Originally built as a smokehouse, the building was converted to a Mule Barn after fire from a lightening storm destroyed the first Mule Barn. 

In the 1852 inventory, Ambrose LeCompte lists 6 work mules on his Vienna Plantation: Aggy, Jamaica, Mick, Natchez, Fanny, and Henry.
