Significance:
This is the site of the Mather School, a school for formerly enslaved people established during Reconstruction in 1868.
Designation:
The site is a part of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network.

Residing close to the school bell, Howard Hall housed the campus’ chapel. The building was named after Mary Howard of Connecticut. Students would go to the chapel located in Howard Hall daily for morning services provided by staff members, senior girls, and guest speakers. Attending church was of importance to Rachel Mather, she taught her first students with her only bible and wanted to spread the Holy teachings for years to come.
